A very old demo from the archives…

Hey guys,

I was looking through my old archives and found a demo from May 2008 of “Pin Me Down” – A track which I’ve never actually gotten around to finishing, even though it’s one of my favourite songs that I’ve written over the years. In fact, it was written circa 2001/2002.

The demo, which I’ve put up on SoundCloud here, was recorded as a guide track primarily for the gang to practice before we went and did the 2FM Session for Dan Hegarty’s show.

The song features Andy Farrell and Jewels Grogan on vocals, Dan LB on Bass and some tweaking from Damo Bolger.

Mass For Minerva now free to download

Hey guys,

My 2007 album “Mass For Minerva” is now free to download.

Enjoy and Happy New Year,

Before Dawn (2004) – Free Download

Hey,

It’s over 8 years since I released my first proper album – “Before Dawn”. It’s a bit rough by the standards of my current stuff but I think there’s few decent tunes on it like “4am Symphony”, “The Harbour (Never Feel Afraid)” and “Our Little Garden”, all three featuring the amazing Becky Cramer. The rest of the tracks were just me finding my feet musically and in terms of engineering. I still cringe when I hear my vocal stuff!

I had help from a few old B.I.F.E (Bray Institute of Further Education) college friends like Peter “Murf” Murphy and Keith Gamble. A lot of help came from my late father who funded the CD duplication and distribution.

So download and enjoy… from here

Note: The MP3s are high-quality so the .Zip is quite large at around 150MB

I’ve since misplaced the original artwork, so here’s a something similar using the same source material…

GeekBox Version 4

Hey, here’s the new versions of my free GeekBox VST plugins:

GeekBox 4

GeekBox Lite

Download .zip from Here

It’s fairly simple, it’s like an LFO filter but with high frequencies used to modulate the cutoff.

The lite version does the same thing but without the sequencers.

install instructions:

1. download
2. Unzip
3. Move the entire GeekBox folder to your VST plugins folder.
4. You may need to add them in your host.
5. Have fun

I’m not sure if the waveforms will work fine without the .dat files but you can try just dropping the .dll files for the plugins in your VST folder and see how it goes.

Hey, I now have a SoundCloud account. See some new demos here:

August Update: Lost Files

Hey, remember I released “Lost Files” a few months back? Well, I forgot to post the link here, so here it is on Fwonk. It’s totally free, the best type of FREE!

Enjoy.

I’m always working on new tunes so I hope to have something else soon.

Styli’s Kick-Ass Customised Stratocaster!

styli_custom_strat_01b

This is the pretty much finished Strat. Originally, it was a standard run of the mill Mex Strat, bought brand new for around €400. I made some changes myself and got help from Dan LB for the complicated stuff like the pickups and battery compartment installation and routing. Dan also provided some of the bits for me like the graphite nut and neck plate. It’s mostly genuine Fender parts, except the nut and pickups.

All in all, it’s nearly there apart from some minor setup work to be done. Even now though, it’s sounding sweet as candy and quiet as a mouse when idle. The output out of the EMG active pickups really has to be heard to be believed!

The cost of modifying it may have been nearly the same price as the original guitar but it was well worth it to have a one-of-a-kind custom awesome sounding strat the way I’ve always dreamed! Very happy, and grazie mille to Dan for all the work!

More Info On Building The Guitar

Most of the parts were obtained through Thomann and StewMac

The original Fender Mex Strat Upgrade model is, however, not available anymore from Thomann but they still do a Mex Strat Classic for about €500. The Fender aluminium pickguard can be found here for 60 quid. Although the Strat came with security strap locks attached, I still had to fork out a measly €13 or so for the strap end locks. The genuine Fender volume and tone knobs set will set you back about €6.50 on Thomann and the locking tuners will cost around €75. I went for the Satin Chrome finish, but they come in a few different finishes. The tremolo back cover and jackplate are standard Fender Strat components and are very easy to find in all sorts of finishes.

The best part though is probably the EMG-SA pickups which can be found here on Thomann for just over 200 quid. They do versions for all sorts of guitars and well worth a gander if you’re thinking of getting new pickups. Being active, they do require a battery and perhaps a battery compartment to be constructed. Dan managed to get hold of a battery box, which he also fitted for me. Perfectly, I might add! Dan also sourced the graphite nut, extra springs for the back of the bridge and the Fender “F” neck plate.

Most of the hard work was done by Dan, as he’s had experience customising guitars and basses so I’d trust him to do a great job. He didn’t disappoint. There was a lot of finicky soldering and routing done to the guitar and the whole job took about 7 hours in total to do. The best part came when we plugged it in… clean… through a PA system… and it WAS CLEAN!… Loads of level, no hiss. The sound was (and is) classic Strat with that “rawk” attitude.

And, in case anyone is wondering, I won’t be selling it… ever!
